Frequently asked questions

What is an IFSC code?

The Indian Financial System Code is an 11-character code that identifies a bank branch for NEFT, RTGS and IMPS transfers. The first four letters are the bank, the fifth character is always 0, and the last six identify the branch — for example SBIN0000001 is State Bank of India’s Kolkata Main branch.

Where can I find my branch’s IFSC?

It is printed on your cheque leaf and passbook, and shown in your bank’s app. You can also search here by IFSC or by the 9-digit MICR code, or browse by bank, state and district.

What is the difference between IFSC, MICR and SWIFT codes?

IFSC is used for electronic transfers inside India, MICR (9 digits) is printed on cheques for clearing, and SWIFT/BIC is used for international transfers — only some branches have one.

Do I need the IFSC for UPI payments?

No. UPI uses a UPI ID or phone number. IFSC is needed when you add a beneficiary by account number for NEFT, RTGS or IMPS.
